In 2008 whilst visiting friends in Turkey, we were asked if we would be interested in buying land near Citlik. Now, almost 2 years later we have almost completed our new home.
As far as possible we have tried to build a contemporary turkish house, employing an architect with traditional values and ideas.
We have never been in the position of building a home before and it has been nothing short of an education. The house is situated in the forested hills above Citlik and can only be reached by mainly unmade roads. During construction this presented numerous problems for the larger vehicles delivering iron and concrete and quite often we had to use tractors. In summer when the road became hard-packed mud this did not present too much of a problem but during the winter months the rain created soft mud which trucks could not easily negotiate and we sometimes had to pack the ruts with broken tiles and stones to make the road passable. Our water has to be obtained from a natural spring in the forest and is pumped into the house from a small purpose-built reservoir just in front of the house. Electricity was a major problem as we are quite some distance from the main supply route. We had to arrange for several pylons to be erected and a transformer to be installed - a major cost.
